For part of our solar power series we will talk about landscaping with solar garden lighting.
Garden lights can provide accents to your favorite areas of the garden and can also illuminate the focal point in your landscape. One of my favorite uses of garden lighting is used to illuminate an old oak tree which is a wonderful focal point of my garden.
The benefit of using solar powered lights to illuminate your garden is pretty obvious. It is one of the most widely used solar device and the most developed type of solar technology used today.
First of all you should figure out what you are trying to illuminate with your new solar lights. How bright do you need it? Is it going to be used as an accent? You might only need a solar light with a couple of LED’s.
Then there is the type of solar panel used in the garden lights. Most solar lights are compact units which comes complete with a panel, battery, light (usually a LED) and the light sensor. Other sets can be connected to your existing solar panel. These lights can be placed in a shady area of the garden which would not normally produce enough solar energy to be powered correctly.
The light sensor is a built in unit of a solar powered garden light. This detects the onset of sunset and rise where it will automatically turn off and on the light. If you want to control this attribute make sure to find a solar light with a manual setting.
If you are using a complete solar light with a panel included make certain you place it in an area which receives adequate sunlight. A common problem with solar garden lights is that it does not stay on all night or has a dull light. The cause is usually that it has not received enough sunlight during the day and is not the fault of the device itself.
Installation is usually very simple, many solar lights come complete with a stake which you can just place in the ground.
It only makes sense to use a solar powered light to accent your garden since it utilizes the most abundant natural power source, the sun.
A few of the products available are solar lamps, fence post lighting, spot lights, walkway lights and others. They can also be used for safety so you can see your way around the outdoors during the night.
