Everything about making your home eco-friendly!
If your monthly utility bills are rising, or your disposable income is falling, it would make sense to see if you can cut your household expenditure in any way. One of the most effective ways could be by reducing the amount of electricity wasted or used in your home.
This invariably means looking at your use of technology and machinery. There are so many in use that it easy to overlook the fact that many are turned on when not in use, wasting electricity and your money. Leaving lights switched on is one of the worst vices. This can really add up if you have a lot of rooms in your home. However, even when lights are in use you can save money by using power-saving halogen or CFL types that use less electricity and could last up to 10 times longer than traditional types. You can even install a dimmable CFL for areas that don’t require full illumination.
We also waste electricity by heating our rooms inefficiently. By leaving windows open when central heating is on, heat is allowed to escape. Similarly, air conditioning is often left on when there is nobody at home to take advantage of it.
Many people don’t realize that leaving appliances like televisions on stand-by means that they are still using a certain amount of energy. It may not seem like much, but it is easy to become complacent and do it so often that it adds up. TVs, computers, monitors and DVD players should all be fully turned off if you want to save money on electricity.
Washing machines, driers and dishwashers are also used far too inefficiently. If you want to save money, only use these when they are close to full, or else you are using a similar amount of electricity to do only a fraction of the job!
Saving electricity through simple actions is an easy way to save money in the home. Once you adopt the correct mindset and see the savings on your bills, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do them before!
