What are Considered Recycled Building Materials?
Recycled building materials are usable materials that were once used in the construction of former homes or buildings. This might include flooring, wooden planks and posts, glass for windows, doors, or decoration, tiles, and even appliances. Some appliances might be usable sinks, refrigerators, bath tubs, and even small items like railing, hooks, or door knobs. Reusable building materials are usually in decent conditions because they need to be able to withstand the lifespan of the next home they will be a part of. Using recycled materials for building purposes is an environmentally friendly way of building a home or other types of structures.
Where do these Materials Come From?
Recycled building materials come from buildings that have been deconstructed but not demolished. This means that the structure was taken apart, piece by piece, and certain parts were in good enough condition to be considered reusable for building other structures. Demolished homes are basically destroyed and the remaining particles become waste because they are not recyclable. This is not as environmentally friendly as the concept of deconstruction is.
Where can I find Salvaged Building Materials?
Materials that can be used again for building purposes can be found primarily at your local dump. There you can find many materials that are usually set aside from other waste. These materials are usually free of charge, so not only are they recyclable, but they are handy if you are on a tight budget. Getting these items from your local dump is good for their business as well because it helps take the load off their work. They encourage scavengers to take what they can because there are many reusable items that are dropped off at the dump.
What is so Great About Reusable Building Materials?
If you are able to use recycled materials when building a home, you are lowering the need for new materials to be created. This means you are indirectly saving natural resources because their need to be used to make building materials is not as great. If everyone was able to build their home using recycled items, the amount of resources destroyed for building materials would diminish greatly. Also, you are helping the environment by eliminating waste if you can use items that are no longer in use. If a building is demolished then the materials become useless, and are dumped aside, left to rot, or worse, remain pointless waste. Another benefit to using recycled building materials is the cost. It its extremely cost efficient to use recycled materials because they are a fraction of the cost of brand new ones. If you save a great amount of money using reusable materials, you will be less likely to go into debt because new materials are very expensive.
What Materials can be used?
There are many materials that you can find from the dump, garage sale, or even antique malls that can be used in building new structures. For instance, the “earth ships” use tires filled with concrete to make very insulated walls. There are also old box cars from trains that when two are put together, can create nicely insulated walls. An “earthbag” is another type of eco-friendly home that uses wasted old papers to create papercrete for the walls. You can often find wood, if its dry, to be used as reinforcement. There are appliances like bath tubs, toilets, and sinks that you can find as well. Some people have even got creative with their use of recycled goods and use old wagon wheels as circular window reinforcements. These types of creations are not only earth-friendly and cost efficient, but are unique and interesting in style.
