Like just about any other topic on the internet there are a lot of discussions about which composter is the “best”. When it comes to composters there are many different kinds which are beneficial for many different situations and all types of people. Some types of composters are beneficial for people with a lot of time on their hands and who don’t mind extra labor. Back porch composters are not one of these labor intensive methods.
So what about a back porch compost tumbler? This is just one type of spinning composter which people use and many argue that it is the best of the bunch. So what makes it different and why is it better than the other types of spinning composters?
Size is an important issue to many people when it comes to a good quality composting bin. Many bins are large and an outdoor compost pile can be an unsightly attraction and also attract unwanted critters. If space is an issue (which it will be if you live in an apartment or have a small property) than this could be an even a larger issue to you. These types of tumblers are small and will fit almost anywhere and since they are extremely efficient they compost your material fast, making more room for the next batch.
Back yard spinning composters are also easy to transport and usually come included with a wheel and handle. This is a great attribute of a composter since you can bring it anywhere either on your property or to a completely different location. This also allows you to easily spread the compost which is produced since you can just move your composter to where you want to amend your garden.
The capacity of spinning composting tumblers is also quite impressive. Even though they are relatively small they can hold a large amount of material, some models hold almost 40 gallons.
How does a back porch spinning composter work?
These back porch compost tumblers work the same way that a spinning composter does, the main difference being that they are easily transported. These work by mixing your organic matter in a compost bin and with a small amount of time and attention you will have a nutrient right supplemental soil which you can use in your garden, either as a soil amendment or as a mulch.
Spinning composters have some valid arguments for why they are the “best” composters on the market but the main points, without being biased one way or another, are that it is a very convenient and efficient way to compost your waste. Even better is that using this type of composter is much like hot composting, without the heavy labor involved. The only recipe which is required for back porch compost tumblers to work is the proper mix of material, some water and the occasional spin.
