7 Things To Remember When Using a Compost Bucket

A compost bucket can be used to collect your food scraps and other organic waste which is then usually added to a compost pile or other composting component such as a spinning composter. Another type of compost bucket, and what we will talk about here, is essentially an inside composting machine which can be used in a variety of ways to compost your food scraps. The following are some key points on what not only a composing bucket does but also on how to use one.

Convenience

A compost bucket is a convenient way to compost your organic waste. Using this form of composting can be done be anyone at any location.

Why use a composting bucket?

A composting bucket allows anyone at virtually any location compost their waste on a small scale. It allows us to recycle our kitchen scraps in a environmentally friendly way and can also provide food for our plants in the garden once it has fully decomposed. These small composters can recycle plant and other organic waste from your kitchen in a short time frame. Many times a compost pail will also come with some sort of drain which you can use to feed to your plants (usually after you dilute it in water).

Size

Many factors determine what the size of your bucket needs to be. How much waste can you gather from your kitchen scraps, how much space you have for the composter and how much compost you actually need are all factors in how large of a bucket you should invest into.

Smell

The odor is one concern which turns many people away from using a composting pail or bucket in their home. Many of the modern composting buckets actually come with a carbon filter which absorbs any odors which would normally be produced, so you do not have to worry about anything smelly in your kitchen.

Types of Compost Buckets

There are many types of composting buckets which are just your standard plastic with the possibility of having a carbon filter top, but what if you want to invest into something a little more efficient? Some compost buckets actually come with a heating unit. The way that organic matter breaks down is by heat (which is usually produced by the carbon in plants as they start to decompose). With a heating element your compost will be reading in a considerably shorter time frame than just letting it sit there and rot. Want your compost even quicker? Look for some beneficial microbes which you can add to your pile to speed up the process even further!

What can you compost?

There are many different items which you can compost.

Basically any type of organic food can be composted including fruits, vegetables and even egg shells. Something like a banana peel, orange peel, bits of lettuce or tomato it can all be added to your compost bucket. Some other examples of items which you can add to your compost are coffee grounds and tea bags or leaves. Even your coffee filters can be added as all paper is compostable.

Another hint is that when you food scraps to a compost pile you should make sure to chop the food into small pieces, this helps them to break down quicker.

Common Problems

There are three major problems that can come with a compost pile or even a composting bucket. These are the odors (which were covered above), fruit flies and vermin.

Vermin

You should never add any type of animal products such as meat or dairy to your compost. This not only can make your pile smell but it can also attract vermin such as rats and mice.

Fruit Flies

Make sure to keep your composting bucket covered at all times. When it is not covered you risk an infestation of fruit flies.
